Bring designer and educator, Dana Bontrager to your store or organization for a special teaching event. All of Dana’s classes can be tailored to best fit your attendees’ interests. A full day consists of a morning session and an afternoon session, for a total of six hours. You can mix and match from the classes and many can be customized to fit shorter time frames.

The Ins and Outs of Binding

Binding is a way of finishing and edge, it can be both functional and decorative. Learn methods for binding inside and outside curves, like necklines and scalloped edges. See multiple ways of binding straight edges, adding treatments like piping and prairie points, and imitation binding. Dana will show her technique on how to create an inside corner like you would find on a square armhole or a stair stepped edge to a quilt. Learn when and how to use a variety of binding options including fold over elastic, seam binding, and self-fabric; how to use tools to create your own binding; how to calculate the amount of binding needed and the difference in binding styles like single, double, French and more!

Heat Texture Treatment

Quickly create permanent fabric texture using a heat gun - no fusing, stitching or steaming needed! This technique adds striking dimension to garments, accessories, home-decor items and more.

Sheer Pleats

Using sheer organza, change the entire look of a base fabric. Add elements of surprise like sparkling threads, trims, even silk flowers from the craft department! Turn that questionable print fabric purchase, in to an designer original!

Sealed with a Kiss

Dana does it again with another intriguing way to manipulate fabric. Fresh leaves and flowers, photos, magazine clippings, bits and pieces can all be embedded on fabric and stitched up into your favorite garment, handbag, accessory or a special wall piece. Create fabrics that shimmer like glass or have the subtle surprise of a matt finish. The effect is permanent, washable and in most cases water resistant! Add a new skill set to your creative repertoire!

Burnout Embellishment Techniques


With a special formula designed to remove plant fibers you can now have
burnout effects and cutwork in half the time. With an inspiring selection of samples, Dana will show you multiple ways of using this amazing product.

Stamping, stenciling, cutwork embroidery, reverse appliqué and more! Take advantage of the comfort of cotton, linen and rayon fabrics and have fun with eco friendly bamboo. In addition, Dana will share special techniques that make your project goes lightning fast and how to make linen virtually wrinkle free!

Experience firsthand the time saving technique of “bagging”. A technique used to line garments completely by machine. We’ll also cover designer details, fitting issues and more!

Perfect Pattern Preparation

How many times have you struggled with fitting a sewn garment? How do you deal with a petite frame or really narrow shoulders? The trick is to do the majority of your fitting BEFORE you ever cut into fabric! Dana will show you the basics of pattern preparation so that you have an excellent foundation for a successful garment. She will show you how to measure correctly for pattern alterations and what "ease" really means. Every student works with the same actual pattern (a fitted blouse style), so you will have a “blueprint” pattern of your body. Simple and easy to understand techniques that will make your sewing fun again!
